Clear Water Spinnerbait

The spinnerbait is a very versatile fishing lure. It comes in several different sizes and the blades and skirts can be changed or modified. The spinnerbait can also have trailers or or other hooks added to the main hook. There are so many options and ways to fish this lure it can either be fun or frustrating. For this article I am going to focus on a spinnerbait that would be fished in clear water.

The spinnerbait pictured above is white and chartreuse with two willow leaf blades. The skirt color along with the two willow blades make this spinnerbait a great choice for clear water and it will be even better on a sunny day. In clear water, fish are going to be feeding more by sight than any other sense. The color of the skirt is important at anytime but especially in clear water. You will want to choose a color that is similar to the forage in the body of water you are fishing.

Willow leaf blades are long and slender. This style of blade is going to create a lot of flash in the water without giving off a lot of vibration. In clear water the flash is going to be more important than the vibration. The amount of sunlight is going to have an effect on the amount of flash your blade are going to create. This spinnerbait has one nickle and one gold blade. If you have ever seen some bait fish flashing through the water you have probably noticed they are not a solid color. If fishing your bait with two different colored blades is not producing the results you are hoping for they can be changed out as needed.

It is important to use the feedback the fish are giving you to make adjustments. A spinnerbait with two willow leaf blades is going to be fished at a faster pace and higher in the water column than other blade combinations. Because this setup is going to be moving faster than others you are going to be targeting active and aggressive fish. If your water temperature is cold or you are fishing post cold front conditions the bass are going to be more lethargic and may not travel far to chase a fast moving bait. You can make adjustments by increasing the weight of your spinnerbait or changing the size of your blades so the lure can be fished slower and at a deeper depth.

The next time you find yourself on a clear body of water with a sunny day this spinnerbait may be a great choice. – Michael
