New Set-up

This winter I got myself a new rod. I can’t remember the last time I got a new rod. What can I say, I’m pretty cheap. In this case I had a gift card and the rod I got was marked down $50 so it was too good to pass up. I wasn’t even at that store to buy a rod so there’s that part of it.

The rod is a 7′ Favorite Defender spinning rod. I fish spinning gear a lot since I throw a lot of finesse baits. As I said I don’t often buy new rods so you can guess I have some that are pretty old and beginning to fall apart so this rod can hop in the rotation and take some pressure off of the old guys. Having a new rod is great but since it wasn’t a planned purchase I didn’t have a reel to put on it. So the other day I picked up a Lew’s spinning reel. It’s got a 6.2-1 gear ratio and seems to be a quality reel. It’s not an overly expensive reel and this is my first Lew’s anything so we will see how many years I can get out of it.

I already have a drop shot set-up and my shaky head set-up. Those never change, I normally always have another rod rigged with a wacky worm so this set-up is going to be very important to letting me expand my selection of baits. I plan be very versatile with this one. Last year I played with the Neko rig a little and there a number of other baits I’d like to try but never really wanted to cut off my main gear for an experiment. I am excited to see what I can get into with this new gear and what new techniques it will allow me to play with. So keep checking back to see how it is going. I am planning a putting more effort into this blog to expect more frequent updates than in the past. – Michael
