The New Set-up Continued

If you are reading a fishing magazine you are probably doing so because you want to learn something that is going to help you catch more fish or become a better fisherman. I haven’t been a member of any organization for quite some time so a monthly magazine in my mailbox wasn’t happening but this year I decided to join MLF so I could get back into competing in some BFL tournaments. So a few weeks ago I got my first issue of Bass Fishing.

In this issue there is an article about how some pros like Mark Daniels and Brent Ehrler set up their spinning gear. After reading it I decided I would give it a try and set up my new rod and reel the way they do. A base layer of mono, Hi Vis braid as the main line and a fluorocarbon leader. They say this set-up is good for more than 75% of their finesse fishing. I have never tried anything like this before. I have also never used braid on a spinning reel. I typically only use mono and just in the last few years have I started to use fluorocarbon with mixed results.

What I didn’t take into account was how hard it was going to be to find Hi Vis braid. I can tell you there isn’t a spool of it in the county I live in or the one above me. But I did finally find some about an hour or so from home. So now I have got everything I need to try this. I am going to use some old Trilene mono as my backing. I have 10lb Sufix 832 braid as my main line and 8 lb Yo-Zuri fluorocarbon for the leader. The only thing I need to do now is learn how to tie an Alberto knot effectively so my lines don’t all snap apart when I try to whack my first fish of the season. I will be putting this set-up to the test. Let’s see what happens. Keep checking back for more updates on this experiment. – Michael
